Abstract

Yu.D. Granin's monograph "The national state. Past. Present. Future" is investigated evolution of theoretical ideas of "nation" and "the national state" in the history of the European philosophy and science of XVIII-XX of centuries, the philosophical bases and research paradigms of the modern concepts of essence, an origin and evolution of the nations and the national states competing in social sciences come to light, their methodological advantages and shortcomings are estimated. In the book are analyzed formation of the national states and their transformation to colonial empires, process of decolonization and emergence of the new national and pseudonational states in the second half of the XX century, new functions of the national states in the modern world and prospects of Russia to become "the national state".
